The first was on the sunny 7th July when Peter led us around Churt for 3 miles and we enjoyed champagne or Bucks Fizz in the luxury of his garden. The second was on the damp and windy St Swithun's Day, 15th July around Pitch Hill and we needed the fizz after climbing a steep ravine at Jelleys Hollow.

Wednesday 8th July 2009 - walk from Harting Down

Today we had a special walk down near South Harting setting off from Harting Down, organised by Bill Joint.

There were 20 walkers, which is down on most Wednesdays two reasons, the weather was unsettled & the walk had been advertised as Hilly.

The pictures starting from their relevant position in the year, tell a story. Setting off looking over South Harting Bill explains the walk. Then off into the fields of golden hay, our first break was at a pub “The Royal Oak” naturally at 11.00am it was closed Bill took some flack from disgruntled members, then off to more hay fields, through onwards & upward, nearly at the top, so they thought!! But it kept getting higher. Finally with the South coast behind them a group picture, less the photographer. The fields improved with many wild flowers, then down we started, soon to be spread out, can’t they keep up called Bill. Then after a few more miles South Harting reappeared on the horizon and the folly near the car park. Then a fantastic field of wild flowers with so may butterflies. A wonderful walk enjoyed by all, thanks Bill, our next point of call was the White Hart Inn in South Harting, excellent service, food & a small drink, well Two pints, Margaret promised to drive home and it didn’t even rain, a wonderful walk.

Saturday Special 8th November 2008 - Lord Mayor's Procession and 'Walk for Diana'

Thirty intrepid ramblers from Farnham, other groups and friends descended on London in rather inclement weather. Half the group took the underground to Mansion House, walking to Cheapside to have a kerbside pitch to watch the Lord Mayor's Procession. The floats, marching bands and the Golden Coach took over an hour to pass by. They then joined the rest of the group in Kensington Gardens.

The 'Walking group' had started in Green Park, walked into St. James Park, up Constitution Hill to Hyde Park and on to Kensington Gardens, with views of three palaces and two mansions. This walk was a 'Walk for Diana’ set up to celebrate the Princess's affections for the open spaces and her love of children. In particular were the Diana fountain and the playground.

We then returned to Waterloo and the South Bank (having some liquid refreshment in the Festival Hall!) and at 5 o'clock watched a superb firework display on the Thames. A grand day out and our thanks to Jenny Frey for great organisation.

Pictures of the day are available to view in our photo gallery.

Saturday Special 11th October 2008 - to West Wycombe

Nineteen ramblers from Farnham, other groups and friends met at the Garden Centre in West Wycombe on Saturday 11th October for a walk to Hughenden Manor, the one time home of the Prime Minister and Queen Victoria's favourite, Benjamin Disraeli. Andy, Amy and I were early and decided to have a coffee and were soon joined by another group from Farnham. It only took 50 minutes to get there!

We set off in the mist to climb to the Church of the Golden Ball and the Dashwood Mausoleum. Unfortunately the Church was closed but we were able to admire it from the outside. As we looked at the Mausoleum several red kites put on a wonderful display of circling and swooping overhead. The sun came out as we rambled over to Hughenden and we even managed to find a coffee stop with seats for everyone!

Hughenden Manor had the feel and appearance of a family home even though it has had some most illustrious visitors. We came away thinking that we would like to discover more about Benjamin Disraeli and what made him the man he was.

A quick walk back and we had time to visit the Hellfire Caves. Those of us who went down decided that it was not a place we would like to visit at night. There are certainly some dark and mysterious tales connected with them. Cream teas were partaken by some and refreshments had by all and we were back home by 5.30. I think we all agreed that we had enjoyed `A Grand Day Out'.

Two pictures of these walks are available to view in our photo gallery.

Farnham Ramblers invade The Isle of Purbeck Sunday 13th July

This year the coach ramble started at Corfe among the lovely Purbeck Hills.  There were 52 folk, so it was fortunate that four options were available, all ending in Swanage.

There was a 5 mile walk from Studland along the coast; an 8 mile walk along Ballard Down on the ridge and then the coastal path; a 13 mile brisk(!) walk in undulating countryside to the South West long distance coastal path or taking the steam train spending the day in Swanage.  It was glorious weather and the scenery superb.  As one of the pictures shows, we shared our picnic lunch with some very friendly ducks!

An hour was spent in Swanage consuming large cups of tea (or ale!) and exploring the town.  A tired and contented coachload arrived in Farnham at 8 o'clock.  Our thanks to David and Gaynor for the organisation and to Devine's for safe travelling.

A few pictures of these walks are available to view in our photo gallery.

Ramble in the Vale of Pewsey - July 2007

In July 2007, 52 members of the Farnham Group had their annual coach ramble in the fields and hills to the west of Marlborough.  Three walks were available - six, eight and ten miles.  There were far reaching views to the north, of the Kennet long barrows and Silchester Hill. Lunch stop was on the hillside above the Wansdyke; an ancient dyke built by a Saxon king to mark the boundary of Wessex.  The wild flowers there were superb - an unusual orchid was found and prompted a few folk to go on their knees to take a photograph!

A welcome pub was found where a few folk stopped for refreshment, whilst the remainder of the party carried along the Kennet and Avon canal in search of a cuppa in Devizes.

The area is full of history - ancient burial grounds, battleground of the Cavaliers and Roundheads as well as pretty little hamlets.  We were fortunate in having a dry day and a tired coachload arrived back in Farnham at 7pm.  Our thanks to Margaret for the organisation and to her, Nick and John McQuinn for leading the walks.

See two photos from the day.

Festival of Winter Walks 2006/2007

Our Festival of Winter Walks 2006/2007 programme proved to be popular - with 174 people and 8 dogs coming out on the eight walks put on by the group.  Quite a record!

Welcome to Walking Week 2006

During Welcome to Walking Week 2006, the group led nine walks ranging from three miles (the family walk) to twelve miles.  Is this a record?

We had 142 folk in total - 11 were given discount forms - there was 1 child (my grandson of two) and 1 dog!

Hard to believe that the Thursday walk from Buriton in 24° was followed by the Friday walk in the Bourne Woods, where everyone was soaked to the skin!  The vagaries of the British Climate!

A few pictures of these walks are available to view in our photo gallery.

Annual Coach Ramble - July 2006

On 16th July 2006, 50 members of the group started out from Sunbury Lock to walk to Ham House on their annual coach ramble.  A shorter walk was available and the group spent a pleasant afternoon at Hampton Court, visiting the Palace and strolling in the grounds.  The longer walkers had a picnic on the riverbank near Hampton Court and then continued towards Ham House.  A welcome interlude was taken at 'The Bouter' in Canbury Gardens, where vast amounts of liquid were consumed!  On reaching Ham House, some folk visited the house and the gardens, whilst others relaxed under the trees, until the coach arrived to take us back to Farnham.  There was so much to see on the river; many types of rivercraft - canoes to paddlesteamers, points of historic interest and lovely riverside houses. In spite of the intense temperatures, there were no heat casualties! and everyone said how much they had enjoyed the day.
